Hillary Jordan is the author of the novels Mudbound (2008) and When She Woke (2011), as well as the digital short, Aftermirth. Her first novel, Mudbound, tells the story of two families, white landowners and their black sharecroppers in Mississippi. Both families are changed forever when their young men return from battle in Europe and strike up an unlikely friendship, in defiance of Jim Crow-era expectations. It was published in 2008 after winning the Bellwether Prize for Fiction, a prize established by author Barbara Kingsolver to recognize literary books of merit that address issues of social justice. Mudbound won numerous other awards including the Alex Award from the American Library Association. It has been made into a feature film directed by Dee Rees starring Mary J Blige and will be released in 2017.
